The 2004 Olympic Games in Athens & Crete, 11-29 August 2004

Crete hosted - at the brand new and purpose-built Pankritio Stadium in Heraklion - a major slice of the football (soccer) events (see schedule below). All other Olympic events took place in Athens, Thessaloniki, Patra and Volos.

• Torch Relay information - the torch relay started on 25 March from Olympia through Greece and all 5 continents (including Africa and Latin America for the first time).

• Photo gallery from the ceremony for the cutting of the olive branch ("kotinos") used for the wreath for the fist Marathon winner in the Olympic Games 2004. The ancient olive tree (the oldest in Europe) is actually in Crete, in Ano Vouves (near the Elia Traditional Inn)
