British Weather – should be good…but for how long?
Just a note to remind you that a few days of good weather in the south of England, after the recent bank holiday weekend, may be misleading!
To be sure to “stock up” with inspiration, traveller’s tales, great experiences and last but not least SUNSHINE, there are still a couple of months for that visit to Greece! (Probably more as sunny weather is not a rare sight in southern parts of the country during the winter)

For over 4 days 40 degree-plus temperatures (asburdly high for June) have caused discomfort and increased health and fire danger throughout Greece, mainland and islands.
Thankfully this heatwave is over.

In northern Europe and many other delightful points upon the globe, this weekend is Easter.
A chance to relax, visit family, meet your lover, visit a loved one, go to a church (even enter and say a few words) – whatever Easter is to you, yes it has become a holiday for all, enjoy it or be rewarded by it.
Here in Greece we are waiting for next weekend when Orthodox Easter weekend reaches us.
You will search for hidden eggs perhaps. We will go after the far more protein-laden real eggs by knocking them together and seeing who wins by breaking the other person’s red-tinted hard boiled specimen.
Hope the sun is shining where you are in spirit and also as a bonus, with luck, in meteorological fact.
Today – Saturday the 15th day of April 2006 is sunny here in Crete and gently warm, with high temperatures reaching between 19 and 23 degrees. The visitor season has started. Closed cafes, invisible under their winter covers, have sprung back to life…tables are being placed on pavements, roadsides, terraces and sea-edge positions with optimism and delight.
After a few days of ferry strikes in Greece – ferry services have re-commenced activity and we anticipate freshly stocked shelves in shops and supermarkets. The rumbling and discussions continue over pay or disputed terms of work…. Meanhwile farmers, growers and those in the perishable goods businesses and industries can return to business as usual, though many have suffered losses due to delayed or cancelled shipments.
After howling high winds on Thursday and at night into Friday, Crete is under a pall of suspended haze and dust particles (not as bad as it may sound as this is a regular phenomenon), creating a Pasoliniesque-style haze, with the sun fighting through. The result is a rather dazzling bright white, hint-of-pink-tinged sky. Storms in much more southern climes bring this haze north every so often…as an impudent interruption, a contrast to our normally clear air and pure skies.
The better part of this is that the southern winds delivering this strange modification of vistas, bring warm air, temperatures meandering in the teens and early twenties (Celsius of course ! ).
A Cretan restaurant we hope to try – Alatsi in Athens.
Using ingredients and recipes from Crete – sounds authentic and tasty – try it and enjoy at Vrasida no.13 near the Hilton hotel (phone 210 721 0501)
Snow fell “all at once” as it always seems to do….much of the country was snow-covered to some degree – including a late-to-work-because-of-the-snow Athens on Tuesday.
Mountains and hilltops over 300 metres were snow covered even in Crete. Crete received months of rain in a night and a day, causing temporary lakes to appear in some parts of Chania while some south and eastern areas saw little of the wet stuff.
Crete has had few rather cold days with daytime temperatures sometimes straining to exceed 6 degrees centigrade. Things, the meteorological soothsayers tell us, will start warming up on Thursday
Perhaps integrity will descend across the land on Friday….! Ho Hum.
Weather shines, flights added, buses on time, Greece popular
A news summary buzz:
New power station in Crete at Atherinolakos gradually delivers…power pylons in place though many still looking for cables : it’s a strange sight to see pylons undressed, without their cables. The power station will provide some of the power for all of the island, is on the south coast between Xerokambos and Goudouras (the journey between the two places is most scenic and dramatic).
Aparently Greece is one of the most popular destinations for US travellers – glad to hear it (Conde Nast Traveler).
Germanwings will add weekly flights to Heraklion from Germany next year during the “season” starting on 6 March 2006…a great connection for travel to and from Germany and onward (or inward) from other European centers ( see http://www.germanwings.com )
Updated bus Schedules for Crete now ready to view and use for your next trip!
14-16 October showed that wonderful warm sunny weather on the south coast of Crete still abounds. The south coast is a pretty good bet for sunny heart-warming weather in October and on many days throughout the winter. North coast Crete gets more of a winter sampling however (some magic micro-climate areas like Mochlos seem milder than the norm and Sitia is a good mild Christmas stop).
September has repeatedly proven to be a great month to visit Crete – crowds are gone, but you are not alone, sizzling, scorching heat has faded, but it’s still hot and evenings are warm and ideal for those by-the-water evening dinners.
Some of the most special small hotels are pretty full in September but many of the normal cookie-cutter types have rooms to spare.
This is the month for the independent traveller, those just setting out to make the best trip they can within a reasonable budget and those just setting out again to enjoy the best and most lavish but characterful treats the big island has to offer.
Who offers the sort of expert, first hand, on-the-spot, friendly, knowledgeable, wholesome, honest advice and suggestions so at least you know you will stay in a fabulous small hotel or a ticklishly delightful villa, or even a spruce studio on a quite and isolated beach ? Who knows Crete but will understand you? Who cares that you really enjoy this massive offering of an island?
