2016 will mark another great year of The Casa dei Mezzo Music Festival - described by The Sunday Times Online as "the most unique and intimate classical music Summer festival in Europe" - and the only exciting classical music festival on Crete offering a dynamic programme to complement the fascinating cultural heritage of this magnificent island.

Casa dei Mezo festival last for three days and feature a great number of concerts. Apart from the opening concert in Makrigialos Harbour, most festival events take place at the Villa Casa dei Mezzo in Makrigialos.

A lovely private house, built on a slope facing the bay of Makrigialos, surrounded by olive groves.

Over the years this festival has been very proud to welcome many really outstanding artists, and these are often artists with significant international careers.

All the artists stay in Makrigialos throughout the festival and this helps to create that very special and unique atmosphere so much enjoyed by artists and audiences alike.

The next festival, for the 10th anniversary, will take place from 24 to 26 June 2016.

This year there is no theme, but have been invited some of the finest classical musicians from several nations to perform. You will experience the music of Schumann, Schubert, Sibelius and Richard Strauss.

One of the highlights will be Wagner's Wesendonk Lieder, sung by mezzo-soprano Hege Høisaeter and accompanied by Tarek Al-Shubbak.

There is a tradition of fine pianists visiting Makrigialos. This year Amit Yahav and Simon Watterton will perform works by Chopin, Liszt, Medtner and Schubert.

Also, the distinguished Polish violinist Janusz Wawrowski will perform music by Bartok, Paderewski, Paganini and Sarasate.

Furthermore, baritone Hubert Wild will sing Lieder by Brahms, Schubert and Schumann and soprano Bogumila Wawrowska will sing works by Dvorak, Lehar, Rachmaninov and Robert Stolz.

Casa dei Mezzo will also host the LidalNorth Opera Workshop in July and it will be a great privilege for us to welcome the eminent American soprano Carol Vaness who will be responsible for bringing Mozart's "Idomeneo-re di Creta" back to Crete.

The man behind this inspired festival is Gunnar Stromsholm, a Norwegian who loves Makrigialos and good music and took this initiative nine years ago, bringing the joy of classical music in this little corner of Crete.

For the 10th anniversary of the festival musicians come from all around the world. Supported is given by the Norwegian Embassy in Athens, the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and the Region of Crete Development Fund. Locals help in the organization with volunteer work, and tourists arrive from everywhere, just to attend this festival!

Today musicians from all around the world –even from New Zealand- come here to perform without pay, the Norwegian Embassy and the Hellenic Ministry of Culture provide the funds, locals help in the organization with volunteer work, and tourists arrive from everywhere, just to attend this festival!

Crete looks forward to welcoming you to the next festival.
