Activities

Keratokambos is a quiet village where you could enjoy beach and sea, fresh fish in tavernas and a spectacular mountain scenery nearby. Explore. Relax, swim, read, write or paint or just spend quality time with someone special.

A favourite with local and foreign visitorsVisit the nearby village of  Viannos  and see the statue memorial - it is one of a kind, impressive, moving and striking - great view also.

Slightly further - visit the Omalos Plateau (of eastern Crete - not to be confused with the one of the same name in western Crete). Ask for directions, while you enjoy a sfakiani pita (a kind of small cheese pie) at one of tavernas in Kato Simi. A slow and extremely bumpy unmade road leads you up to this surreal landscape. Make sure you have plenty of daylight left, two hours leaves a good margin, this is not a road to try at night. You can take a different (quite interesting, with breathtaking views) way down, heading towards Embaros (ask the old man who is often at the little church in the plateau for directions). Have a stop at the little kafeneio in Embaros (we had an excellent greek coffee - treated - and an interesting discussion about politics here !).

Take a daily cruise to Chrissi Island, which is located 8 miles away from Ierapetra (52km) and the cruise takes almost a hour. The boat arrives to the south coast of the island and you have to walk 10 minutes to the famous north beach, with the turquoise  shallow water and the white sand. The beach is well organised, with sunbeds,  umbrellas and a beach bar. On the beach there also many trees, if you prefer to relax under the tree shadow. In the high saison, the beach is full of tourists, but the beach is long enough to find your own quite place to swim and relax.

Visit Kapsa Monastery, mountain pine forests and the historic villages of Skinokapsala (74 km) , Orino and Pervolakia. See the impressive panoramic view across eastern Crete with its surrounding islands and islets from the 1500 metre Afendis Stavromenos mountain top.

The buzzing north-coast town of Ayios Nikolaos, the swanky resorts and golf courses of Elounda, the leper island of Spinalonga and the mountain plateau of Lasithi are all feasible as day-trips from here.

Next  stop is the cosmopolitan Elounda, The way from Agios Nikolaos to Elounda is one of the most beautiful ways on the island. Take the boat from Elounda or from Plaka for a mini cruise to Spinalonga island, an ex lepra colony. Spinalonga became even more famous because of the book " The island" by Vicroria Hislop . A visit to the island is a must and will be unforgettable!
