For the more sporty windsurfing or kayaking with UCPA watersports, based on the beach in Almirida, with equipment for hire and tuition available. Or maybe you could have a look on our page with activities here.

Take a 2-hour boat excursion with Dream Adventures (based in Almirida) to visit the sea caves at Drapanos, which you can explore by snorkel.

Visit Chania (30 mins' drive), with its lovely Venetian harbour. Check out the Archaeological Museum, housed in a former church and of course the romantic cobbled alleys full of colours and nice small arty boutiques

Explore one of the greenest regions of Crete, Apokoronas, with its peaceful beauty and unique landscape full of olive, fig, citrus and avocado orchards. Swim in its freshwater lake of Kournas, visit the Roman and Greek ruins of ancient Aptera, or head to the sandy beach at Kalives, a shallow beach ideal for families.

Catch the boat from Kastelli Kissamou to Balos's lovely sand beach and the tiny island of Gramvoussa. The ferry that will take you there leaves in the morning and sails close to the coastline giving you the opportunity to take a good look at the landscape and the phenomenon of land elevation by six to nine meters above sea level (you can see the difference in the colour of the rocks - the west of Crete has been rising out of the sea while the east has been sinking for the last 2000 years).

Explore Rethymno old town (45 mins) with its small graphic harbour, the imposing 16th-century Venetian fortress, cobbled alleys, Ottoman-era minarets and Venetian churches and fountains.

Hike or maybe explore by a jeep the White Mountains of Crete, the largest mountain range in Crete, or walk down the well known Samaria Gorge (open May-Oct) down to the village of Agia Roumeli on the south coast.  It is the second most visited tourist attraction on Crete (following the Minoan palace of Knossos) Samaria is not a simple stroll for those unused to walking and of course wear good hiking boots and take plenty of water.
