May is International Month of the Mediterranean Diet

Dear Crete Traveller,

I hope you are doing great and enjoy a glorious weekend.

May is International Month of the Mediterranean Diet and is celebrated worldwide on social networks with diverse hashtags, such as  #MedMonth or #mediterraneandietmonth.

There have been plenty of new studies on the Mediterranean Diet the past few weeks:

Better Brain Function: A study published in the journal Neurology, showed that people who follow a Mediterranean Diet in their late 20's and 30's had better brain function 25 years later. In fact those who followed a Mediterranean Diet when they were young had a 46% less chance of having poor brain function.

May Lower Risk of Skin Cancer: A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that women who followed a Mediterranean Diet had a lower skin cancer risk, particularly melanoma and basal cell carcinomas.

Mediterranean Diet and Gestational Diabetes: In a study published in the journal PLOS Medicine, researchers studied whether a Mediterranean Diet could protect from gestational diabetes. The results showed that women who followed a Mediterranean style diet had a 35% reduced risk of gestational diabetes and they gained 2,75 pounds less than the control group.

The diet is based on the eating habits in Greece and especially the island of Crete and also southern Italy, around 1960.

At that time, the rates of chronic diseases in these areas were among the lowest in the world and life expectancy among the highest.

Since then, numerous studies have shown that the plant-based Mediterranean Diet is one of the most balanced and heart-healthy diets in the world!
