Airports in Crete
There are three airports in Crete: Heraklion Airport (or "Kazantzakis" airport - code: HER) Chania Airport (or "Daskalogiannis" - code: CHQ) and the small Sitia Airport (code: JSH). All of them are international airports.
1. Heraklion International Airport :
- BUSES: The bus from Heraklion airport certainly isn’t the most comfortable choice, but it definitely is the most economic one. The bus station is just outside the airport grounds, which means you will have to walk a short distance to the nearest road where you will be able to board your bus. If you choose to use the local transport, the bus station is located just outside the airport grounds, on the central road to your left (the central road is located straight ahead of you as soon as you exit the arrivals building of the airport). Buses arrive every 10 minutes and are headed from the airport to the Heraklion KTEL terminal, which is located in a central spot inside the city of Heraklion. Bus schedules start daily at 06:00 a.m. and last until 23:00 p.m.The estimated time of your route until you reach the center of Heraklion is about 20 minutes.
Please note: Blue buses are headed towards Heraklion city, while green ones connect Heraklion to other cities. Always carry cash with you, most drivers cannot accept credit or debit cards. Always keep a close eye on your personal belongings while traveling by bus. You may pay the fare directly to the driver before you board the bus.
- TAXI: A taxi, which in our opinion is the most comfortable option, into the town takes 10-15 minutes and costs 16 euros. You could book your taxi via our partner website.
[There is an official charge, included in the above estimates when a taxi takes you to or from an airport or port. Luggage can be charged extra].
- Parking: Has paid parking, just across the road, opposite the airport entrance.
- Airport facilities: Cash/ATM machines for cash advances and withdrawals, exchange booth, Coffee, and snacks are available, as well as a sit-down cafe/restaurant. "Duty-free" shop and gift shops.
- Disability Access: Persons with disabilities will find that the Heraklion airport is moderately accommodating. There are many stairs and near the baggage claim, there is only one toilet with wheelchair access. If further assistance is needed, help can be found at the information desk or can be set up directly with your airline ahead of time.
- Information desk: The information desk is open 24-hours a day and can be reached at +30(0)2810 397129.
- WiFI: Free WiFi is available throughout the airport but it may be slow or unavailable if the airport is very busy.
- Lost property: should be made to the information desk. Lost & Found at Nikos Kazantzakis Airport Tel: +30 2810 397368
- Luggage storage: Lockers can be purchased at the airport car park so you don't have to carry around your belongings if you’re spending a long time in the airport.
Lockers cost around 12 Euros per day and can be accessed 24-hours a day. Hours: open 7:00AM – 10:00PM.
Sample rates are:
small locker for €3,00/6 hours or €9,00/1 day or €23,50/1 week
large locker for €6,00/6 hours or €11,50/1 day or €42,50/1 week.
Rates are available for medium size lockers and for longer-term storage. You can found the information near the baggage area in the Arrivals Hall.
Information center tel: +30 2810 397136
2. Chania International Airport :
- BUSES: Chania airport is served by the KTEL of Chania and is connected by regular bus services to Chania Town, Souda, and Rethymno city. The starting point of the buses is located between the buildings of the arrivals and departures. The single fare to/from the city of Chania is 2,5€. Tickets can be purchased by the bus driver or online.
INFORMATION Phone: +30 2821093052, TICKET OFFICE Phone: +30 2821093306
- Taxi is the best option if you are not renting a car rental. In the high season (July to August) possible will be very difficult to find one without a reservation and you may have to wait a while for a taxi to come. A taxi into the town takes 20 minutes and costs 24 euros. You could book your taxi via our partner website.
- Parking: There is paid (quite expensive) parking, running in front of the airport building. Long term (lower cost) parking is available a few hundred meters before the airport gates. The long term rental place offers to pick up when you arrive service, taking you with their van to the parking lot.
- Airport facilities: Cash/ATM machine for cash advances and withdrawal. Coffee and snacks are available. "Duty-free" shop and gift shops. Tel: 28210-63245, 83800.
- WiFI: Free WiFi is available throughout the airport but it may be slow or unavailable if the airport is very busy.
- Left luggage: There is no left luggage facility or storage and lockers at Chania International Airport
- Lost & Found: For items left on the aircraft you have to contact your airline directly. For items found at the terminal area, Lost & Found is operated by airport police.

Domestic Flights to Crete - The Airlines
Within Greece all flights are short hop, so you might think there would be little to choose between airlines.
Purely on grounds of quality and service, our favorite is Aegean Airlines (www.aegeanair.com), which ranks in our experience, with the best of European airline companies.
- Aegean Airlines have a code-sharing agreement with Lufthansa - connections with Lufthansa hubs and gateway airports bring some of Europe "closer" to Athens, Thessaloniki, and all Greek airports served by Aegean.
- Olympic Air (formerly Olympic Airways - www.olympicair.com), the former national carrier, now fully privatized.
- Search among 20.000 flights and more than 800 airlines and book online your next flight - Best available fares
- Cyprus Airways - ( www.cyprusairways.com ) with new flights since 2012.
- SkyExpress (www.skyexpress.gr) is a regional airline based in Heraklion Crete. It operates an 18-seat Jetstream 3102 jet aircraft, connecting Crete to other Greek islands, e.g. Rhodes, Santorini, Kos, Mykonos and Mytilini (Lesvos).

About charter flights to Crete
Charter flights are few in the winter, but there are many from the end of March/April to the end of October. Charter flights to Chania, Heraklion, and Sitia from most European countries operate in this peak period, summer sun attracts! The number of charter flights to Heraklion is greater than to Chania, but in the last years a lot of low-cost airlines which serve Chania as well
Sitia is opened to direct charter flights since 2012, which makes access to the east of Crete much easier.
