From the parking area, there also is an alternative, the mountain on the right called Gigilos.

This is the second-highest face in the whole of Greece with 1000 meters in length. Lots of rock climbing activity on this mountain and a great hike too.

The group will meet in Omalos Plateau where the hike starts.

Gigilos (2080 meters) is the most accessible high peak of the White Mountains. We'll need just 3 hours to reach the summit and another 2 hours to return back. The return is down the same way, so the walk can be curtailed at any stage if you prefer.

There are spectacular views from the summit, such as most of the high summits of White mountains and picturesque view to the open sea and Heraklion town.

Not Included

- Transport to and from Crete, picnic lunches during the walks, and everything that is not listed above.
- You will need to pack your lunch. Other than that you will need at least 1.5lt of water (ideally 2-3 during the summer months), sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, a light jacket, and good hiking shoes. If coming during the winter you need to have full winter mountaineering clothing as temperature can get below 0oC near the summit.

Period

- All year long. During the winter months, you will need to have excellent self-rescue skills on snow using your ice axe and crampons due to snow. Usually, there is snow from late December to late March.
- We start around 10 am, we'll send you an email with the exact time as it changes depending on the season (daylight). During the summer months will try to start the earliest possible.

Transport

If we pick you up we will send you the exact meeting point otherwise we will meet in Ksiloskalo at Omalos plateau.  Otherwise, you could use your own car. We suggest our sister website www.crete-car-rental.com, which offers competitive prices.

Difficulty

The Gigilos hike is a demanding trek with a maximum of 5-6 hrs walks on rocky terrain. Participants should be in very good physical condition. Experience is essential during the winter.

Equipment

Daypack (approx. 35-45lt), trekking shoes, fleece jacket, windproof jacket, water bottle (at least 1.5lt of water during the summer), hat, sun cream, sunglasses, and ice ax/crampons if you choose this trek during the winter.

What will happen if the weather is bad and we cancel the trip?

A full refund will be given. As an alternative, we might offer you a different hiking trip or a cycling trip with e-bikes.

Notes

Please bear in mind that the itinerary can be altered for numerous reasons beyond our control (e.g. harsh weather, trail conditions -- snow) to ensure the safety and the well-being of the group. The final hiking selection is left up to the guide. The temperature during the summer months (June - early September) is between 20oC - 35oC. Sun cream and hat is a must! During the winter temperature on the summit might drop down to -15oC. Usually is somewhere between 0/-6oC.
