Eating
At Adeste Villas, the open-plan, fully equipped modern kitchen is a delight to use: plenty of surface area, brushed steel appliances galore, extra-wide drawers with shiny white crockery in every shape and size. Plates, Freezer, Kettle / water-boiler, Cutlery, Dish Washer, Toaster, Glasses, Oven, Illy Coffee Maschine (complimentary 42 capsules).
Upon your arrival, you'll find a hamper with traditional Cretan products. For further supplies, Kokkino Chorio (200m), Plaka Village (2.5km) and Almirida (3.5km) will oblige.
You'll eat outside most of the time, on a lovely decked dining terrace facing the pool and sunset. But if it does turn chilly, there's another table for 6 or 8 inside.
Pre-arrival request and shopping service as well as traditionally cooked food delivered to your door on request.
The caretakers can arrange for a private chef to whip up healthy Cretan dishes.
Alternatively, stroll into Plaka Village (2.5km) with a lot of traditional tavernas and a pizzeria, or at the small taverna at Kokkino Chorio square, Gavalohori (10 minutes there) for fresh home cooking at Gavalianos or Arismari Tavern, next to the war memorial. Down at Almirida, Aeraki serves the best fish. For something snazzier, head to Chania (27.5km).
Kids
All ages are welcome and they will love the small children's pool at Adeste Villas.
Chania is a wonderful place for a family vacation where beautiful sandy beaches may seem more than enough to keep children happy on their family vacation, but it would be wrong to think this is all there is on offer for young travelers visiting the beautiful island of Crete. Plenty of kids' activities around, like horseback riding, archery, Limnoupolis Water Park, Botanical Park, and public gardens in Chania. All our young guests are treated like royalty at Adeste Villas: free baby equipment, kids’ meals, paddling pool, pool toys, and even a concierge service to propose family outings, games, and activities that no grown-up can resist!
If you come with younger ones, the owners ask that you supervise them carefully - though of course the pool terrace and various balconies are balustraded.
Best for Children (4-12 years), Teenagers (over 12 years).
Family-friendly accommodation: Baby cot and allergy-proof bedding, baby monitor (upon request), highchair, electric sterilizer kit (plus bottles, powder dispenser, teat brush), feeding set (bowl, cutlery, beaker), baby bath.
Activities
- Explore the unique Apokoronas region: its rolling olive- and cypress groves are backed by a rocky ridge that drops to Crete's north coast, and is laced with wildflowers and views of snow-capped peaks in spring. One of the prettiest of its sleepy villages is Gavalohori with kafeneia shaded by plane trees, narrow lanes flanked by whitewashed cottages, and a small folklore museum worth visiting.
- Kokkino Chorio or the "red village" on the Drapano Cape, overlooking the Souda Bay, derives its name from the blood that fled here in 1821 when the Turkish army murdered 150 women and children in a cave downwards from the village. Kokkino Chorio is a very authentic traditional Cretan village without many accommodations. Although there are three churches in Kokkino Chorio, the village is not very big and there are only a couple of shops and kafenions and one mini-market. Only at the edge of the village are some concrete buildings (update 2009: these have now been transformed into beautiful holiday homes). In front of the church, a scene from "Zorba the Greek" was filmed: the stoning of the widow.
- Above the village near the Agios Georgios church, there is an underground bunker complex. Three corridors lead to the underground quarters, which supposedly were covered with wood. According to the old inhabitants, there was even a movie theater. From the point of Cape Drapano there was a cableway to the entrance of the bunker.
- On the edge of the village Kokkino Chorio, there is a glass-blowing factory. You can see the piles of bottles outside that are waiting to be recycled. The factory is pretty new and dates from 1986. If you like it is possible to see the glassblowers at work (opening times 0.800 - 12.00 & 13.00 - 15.00). The center of Kokkino Chorio remains pretty much the same with the usual jumble of houses that have been restored and houses that are falling apart (some with overgrown Venetian arches). In the main square opposite the church and one of the village streets, you will find a taverna where you can have something to eat. Below Kokkino Chorio there are some small coves with sandy beaches.
- Explore the White Mountains of Crete and enjoy a wine tasting at one of the best wineries in Crete, even Greece, Manousakis Winery.
There are decent beaches nearby:
- Koutalas (1.5 km): An isolated and unspoiled beach with interesting cave formations, such as the ‘Elephants’ Cave’. Make sure that you have all the necessities, such as shade, food, and water. There is also a large shaded area with stone benches. To get there you should turn right after the STOP sign down the road. About 900m further north, you will see a concrete road that leads directly to the beach.
- Almirida beach (3km): Two sandy beaches separated by a rocky peninsula. The larger has good facilities (sunbeds, sea sport activities, fish restaurants, cafes) and shallow transparent waters. Ideal for families or crowd seekers.
- Kalives beach (6km): sun beds & sandy beach, restaurants, not exposed to wind, beach volley. You can leave your car in either parking area of the village. Some of the seafront café and tavernas offer free sunloungers to their customers.
- Kiani Akti or Blue Beach (1km after Kalyves): Long quiet beach with sunbeds and small canteens for drinks and snacks. In the middle of the beach is the delta of the river Kiliaris, transferring water from the top of the White Mountains – warm water lovers, beware, it might get a bit to chilly for your taste!
- Ombrogialos (8 km): Small rocky bay with green and blue deep waters between Paleloni and Kefalas. Above the dock is a fish tavern, popular to sea divers. You can access the beach by car through the asphalt road that starts from Paleloni.
- Georgioupoli beach (12km): very touristic, sun beds & long sandy beach, restaurants, exposed to wind, horse riding (sometimes on the beach)
- Horse riding lovers have the opportunity for exciting galloping along the Cretan sea in Georgioupoli and the countryside as well. A horse riding Centre organizes, early morning and evening ride at 3 different levels. You just need to make a reservation.
- History buffs should visit the Minoan-Greek-Roman hilltown at Aptera. The small archaeological site of Aptera (the ancient town of the Minoan era) is well worth a visit. From here there are wonderful sea views to the port of Chania (Souda) and the Akrotiri peninsula. Continue to visit Itzedin Castle - a Turkish castle, built in the 19th Century (also known as the Kalami fort). Visit the nearby Stilos Village to hike through the classic Cretan countryside: oleander-lined paths lead into a narrow rocky defile.
- You could drive to the dramatic and tragic Orthodox monastery of Arkadi (1hr) or, at a pinch, the Minoan capital at Knossos (2hrs).
- Hike the diminutive gorge at Faraggi near Stilos, or one of its bigger brothers on the south coast: Imbros (1hour drive, 3-4 hours hike) is the most accessible, while Samaria is the toughest and longest day out, but also the most spectacular
- Don't miss Chania's gorgeous old town (30 mins drive): set around a Venetian harbor, its pedestrian alleys are lined with boutiques and bars (try and hear some live Cretan music, it's very soulful); the covered market is a cornucopia of health-giving herbs and cheeses, and its Archaeological Museum is the area's best.
- If you've been there and done that, Rethymno (45 mins) is similar, except that Greek students outnumber tourists, and the Ottoman and Venetian influences are stronger still: timbered houses, spiky minarets and a huge fort on the hill.
- Village “Verekinthos” is an arts and crafts village that stands between Souda & Tsikaland at the eastern gate of Chania and it aims to revive and sustain the arts which have been always an integral part of Cretan life and culture. At this same place there were many workshops producing pots (tsikalia), giving thus the name to the town and in the very same place nowadays run silversmiths and goldsmith’s as well workshops for ceramics, sculpture, glass making, hagiography, painting, masks, mosaic, leather, decorative objects, and traditional Cretan knives. Visiting hours are 10.00-14.00 and 19.00-21.00 except Saturday afternoon and Sunday.
