Lovely Crete has a unique and spectacular coastline and calls you to explore it by sea kayaking.
- Small Group
- Sea Kayak
Paddle the clear, blue Mediterranean waters; explore sea caves, tunnels, and arches; relax on deserted beaches; explore uninhabited islands.
Maybe one of the most beautiful and eternally unchanging parts of Crete is the southwestern coast. This area is known for its varied scenery and high rugged cliffs contrasting beautifully with the blue sky and sea
During this trip, you will spend 7 days and 6 nights touring the southwest coast of Crete Island. This is the best alternative way to discover the land ... by paddling on a sea kayak. Places nearly inaccessible via land, remote villages, ruins, and antiquities will leave an unforgettable experience!
Transfer to the hotel in Sougia city (around 4 hours from Heraklio). In the evening we will have a brief presentation of the whole trip and will continue with a short practice on deepwater rescues and other important things regarding safety that you need to aware of while paddling (Overnight in hotel, Sougia).
After breakfast, we leave for the seaside village of Agia Roumeli on the south side of Crete. This is a paddling distance of 16km, stopping off at some of the most beautiful and remote beaches along the south coast. We will spend the rest of the day swimming, snorkeling, and exploring the area. You can also hike the first part of the Samaria gorge if you wish as Agia Roumeli is located very close to Samaria gorge. If the weather is good and camping is an option we will camp in Agios Pavlos beach which is very close to Agia Roumeli.
Today we paddle from Agia Roumeli to Sfakia. This is a paddling distance of 20km. We will stop for a break at two of the most famous beaches on the south coast, Agios Pavlos and Marmara, where we will also have lunch before paddling to Sfakia. (Overnight in Chora Sfakion)
Today we will paddle from Sfakia to Rodakino. This is a great paddling day, with plenty of beaches to explore with superb scenery. Overnight in tents. If you prefer you can stay in a hotel (please mention this when you book for this trip). The total distance is 20km.
From Rodakino we will paddle towards to famous Preveli beach where we are going to stay in tents. Behind the Preveli beach is an extensive glade of palm trees and an impressive river. This is a paddling distance of 18km. If anyone is interested in we can have a quick walk to the monastery of Preveli. There are strong indications that the first core of the Monastery was organized on the area of the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist or Kato Monastiri (the lower monastery), during the II Byzantine period of Crete, around the 10th or the beginning of the 11th century, when many monasteries were established on the south coast of Crete. The oldest date related to the monastery is 1594, and it is engraved on a bell of the monastery. The monastery was probably founded during the Venetian occupation by a feudal lord known as Prevelis. When in 1649 the Turks occupied Crete, they destroyed numerous church establishments, among them the monastery of Preveli.
Today’s paddle is from Preveli to Agios Pavlos. Overnight in hotel. This is a distance of 12km. Agios Pavlos is a great place for practicing kayak skills as it is very protected. It is also great for snorkeling and free diving.
Agios Pavlos towards Agia Galini. This is a great day paddling with some superb caves just a few minutes before we arrive at our destination. This is a distance of 13km. This is the end of our trip. We transfer you to Heraklion airport at a convenient time.
Depending on the weather it might alter a little bit the above plan. We can remove some days if you wish to do a shorter trip. Just get in touch with us to create your custom kayak trip.
If the weather goes really bad we will spend most of the days hiking or doing an alternative paddling trip in Western Crete.
