We had a wonderful time driving around Crete- the itinerary worked really well and we saw some great sites - Gournia, Phaistos, Zakros -  as well as the small villages and fantastic coastlines.  The drives through the mountains were spectacular and we enjoyed the small tavernas on the way.
We have until Saturday in Chania and are looking forward to the walk in Samaria Gorge on Friday.
Thank you for your help and suggestions. 
I do hope to return to Crete one day!
