St. Minas Cathedral The patron saint of Iraklio, St. Minas has his majestic home in one of the largest churches in Greece. Built on a cross plan with two bell towers gracing the rear, the church has been repeatedly scarred by battles for the city’s conquest. Following 30 years of restoration attempts, the cathedral was finally returned to its original splendor in 1896, to ecstatic celebrations by the city’s populace.

Explore 25th of August Street Ottoman, Venetian, modern. Buildings with a unique co-existence that showcase the city’s rich and intense historical legacy. The pedestrian 25th of August Street that runs from the old port up to Lions Square switches back and forth between history and everyday modern life: shops, offices, the elegant church of St. Titus and monuments. A one-of-a-kind jumble with elements that distinguish themselves from the rest: the Venetian Loggia, once a meeting place for the aristocracy and today one of Europe’s best-preserved Venetian monuments, and the Basilica of St. Mark, today housing the Municipal Picture Gallery.
Historical Museum of Crete The museum’s rooms play host to a 2,000-year-old history, displaying a wealth of utilitarian and decorative objects from the Roman and Arab periods, passing through the Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish occupations as well. Stand in front of the wooden model of the city of Iraklio as it looked in the 17th century and marvel at the peak of the city’s power in Venetian times. Ponder the 21-year siege of the city by Turkish invaders, the desperation at the fall into enemy hands, the union of the island with the rest of Greece in 1913 and the famed Battle of Crete in the island’s more recent history.
