A great opportunity to escape from the beach for a few hours.

In a short distance from "Koumpedes" in Heraklion, at the foot of Strouboulas (880 meters), next to the old highway, near the 14th-kilometer sign to Rethimno, there is a big circular ditch known as the "Threshing Floor".

It is a ground subsidence with a circular shape up to 90 meters in diameter. Its slopes are steep and vertical reaching up to 60 meters of height from the bottom of the formation.

Descent into the interior is feasible on foot from the South-West side following a certain pathway.

Geologists believe that it is a sinkhole, formed by the depression of an underground cave, during the Pleistocene period.

With an altitude of 800 meters and a geographical position next to the town of Heraklion, Mt Strouboulas seems to be uninteresting for most of the hikers-climbers. However, standing at the summit one will be inspired by the views.  

What is important for the hiker is the short time needed to reach the top - 30-45 minutes from the dirt track road or 1.5 hours from the old national road. As a result, one can walk to the top even on weekdays or in an afternoon after work.

This is a short hike suitable for everyone, including young children. This is a great opportunity to experience something different during your beach holiday.

Price: 30€ or 70€ for a private hike, just you and the guide.

Transport: You will need to use your own car. We suggest our sister website Crete-Car-Rental.com, which offers competitive prices. Due to Greek law, we are not allowed to transfer you with our vehicles. This is allowed only from companies registered with the Greek Tourism Organization (called EOT) which Enjoy-Crete is not part of it as we offer only the guides & equipment in our trips.

Group Size: 2-15 participants.

Difficulty: A hike suitable for everyone. No previous experience is required.

Equipment: Daypack (approx. 25-35lt), trekking shoes, water bottle (at least 1lt of water during the summer), hat, sun cream, sunglasses, and fleece jacket, windproof jacket if doing the hike during the winter.

Notes: Please bear in mind that the itinerary can be altered for numerous reasons beyond our control (e.g. harsh weather, trail conditions) to ensure the safety and the well-being of the group. The final hiking selection is left up to the guide.

The temperature during the summer months (June - early September) is between 30oC - 42oC. Sun cream and hat is a must! During the winter temperature on the summit might drop down to 4oC.
