Elos Village

description

Elos is a small village with few stone houses where its inhabitants are mostly engaged in agriculture cattle breeding.

The tiny, traditional village of Elos is located 60km southwest of Chania Town, which is situated a short distance from Kissamos on the West part of Crete, on the way to the well-known Monastery of Chrissoskalitissa and the unique, great, sandy beach of Elafonissi.

The village is surrounded by lush greenery, olive groves, and plane trees.

In late October, there is the Chestnut Festival.

The Chestnut Festival is one of the island’s remarkable events during fall.

It is celebrated every October or November, but for the exact date, it is advisable to check with locals in order not to miss that.

The village of Elos is surrounded by chestnut trees, which form picturesque scenery and, of course, bring the harvest. To mark the coming autumn and proudly demonstrate the chestnut harvest, the local population devotes special attention to the Chestnut Festival.

This small, but authentic happening, gives a chance to Elos to show off its chestnut produce and attract quite some curious visitors over the weekend, which is reserved for this extraordinary event.

Travelers can expect music, dancing, eating, and drinking as essential parts of the celebration. And of course great traditional food.

How to get there

By Air:  From May through mid-October there are direct charter flights to Chania and, more frequently, to the capital Heraklion. Tickets can be bought in advance for almost all flights via our partner website.

By Sea: The journey is the thing". A superb way of enjoying the journey to Crete is to fly to Athens and take the ferry from Piraeus (Pireas) - the port serving Athens. A still-romantic way to travel by the overnight ferry from Piraeus to Chania-Souda port or Heraklion Port. Tickets can be bought in advance for all ferries via our website.

By Car: If you want to explore the region while you're here, we recommend that you rent a car, other means of transport are limited and/or infrequent. We suggest our sister website, which offers competitive prices and you can collect your car at either airport.

By Taxi: Book your taxi transfer online easily and safely from the airport or port to any location via our website.

Where to stay

Your best option for staying here is our Milia Traditional Village, this retreat is an alternative, ecologically sound collection of stone buildings with a matching taverna serving natural foods, endless hiking paths, wooded hillsides, and as far away from it all.
