Activities
The area is quite famous for hiking and mountaineering. Livadia village is located in the middle of the European path E4- a seaside route of exceptional natural beauty- that starts at the village of Kambos and continues through the villages of Livadia, Chrisoskalitisa, and Elafonisi.
For Basketball fans there is a basketball field close to the main Orthodox church in Livadia village.
For those interested in water sports kite-surfing and paddling can be arranged in the area of Elafonisi by a professional well-known club. Fishing, snorkeling & diving in Livadia bay is a unique experience. Diving by a professional team in the Elafonisi area can also be arranged.
A must for the most of the people maybe .... drive to the lagoon-like beach at Elafonissi - early, to beat the crowds; and visit the Chrisoskalitissa Monastery on your return.
Visit Kedrodasos or the wood of cedars is situated southern from Elafonisi beach. It is a protected area since the cedars may be more than 500 years old. It is one of the two kinds of wood of cedars of Crete and the last of South Europe. It covers an area of 110 acres of land, a beautiful place ideal for nudism. The beach is covered by white sand and a few rocks and it is protected by the strong wind of the neighboring area of Elafonisi. The European path E4 comes along the beach and there are yellow and black signs everywhere. It is not well accessed on foot but well approached by boat. Τhere are no facilities in the area which still make the wood of cedars one of the last unspoiled paradises of Europe.
Boat trips with Amygdalia Villas private boat can also be arranged. Daily cruises to the most magnificent beaches as well as romantic trips along the coast to watch the sunset savoring a glass of champagne on board. Magnificent voyages from Balos and Gramvousa- the pirates' island- to Sfakia. Daily cruises from Elafonisi to the island of Elafonisi, Kedrodasos (the wood of cedars), Agios Ioannis beach and the Lake of Vienna. Romantic trips ideal for couples preferably chosen by newly married couples along the coast during sunset!
The Orthodox Church in the middle of Livadia village celebrates three times a year on the 5th of May, on the 27th of July and on the 1st of January. A small fair takes place on these days at the hall events of the church.
On the 15th of August, the Assumption day the Monastery of Chrisoskalitissa celebrates. The day before on the 14th of August a big feast takes place in the area of Chrisoskalitissa where a great number of people have fun and taste local food at a tavern of their choice.
On the 2nd of September Agios Mamas, the small old chapel below Amygdalia villas celebrates. The sight of the old chapel fitted in rugged Cretan nature offers a unique picture. Olive trees & fig trees along the path leading to the chapel are the natural boundaries of the place of celebration.
Visit the nearby Paleochora which offers an extensive sandy beach, windsurfing, whale watching trips, dolphin spotting excursions, bird watching - a lot of raptors and songbirds
Walk a circuit route from Paleochora to Anydri via the gorge to return along the coast. And don't miss to swim during your return at Gialiskari Beach at the end of the gorge. The nicest stretch is the beach with coarse sand at the eastern end, left of the Kantina.
You could use the ferry, and hike the famous Samaria Gorge (from Ayia Roumeli) or the quieter Ayia Irini gorge (from Sougia)
Or catch the ferry to Sougia, Agia Roumeli, and Loutro ... full of surprises
Catch the weekly ferry to Gavdos, a remote, and no better place for peace and isolation a marijuana-friendly islet of dunes and low cedar trees, which is also Europe’s southernmost point ... don't forget to return back.
Visit the monastery of St John (key to the museum from Alpha taverna) at Azogires the most beautiful village around Paleochora, an eccentric place full of legends involving river nereids in its waterfalls and medieval ascetics who inhabited cave dwellings.
Are you not so active .... maybe a bit lazy ... using the ferry, hike the famous Samaria Gorge (short way - from Agia Roumeli) or the quieter Ayia Irini gorge (from Sougia).
