Since ancient times honey, has been used both as a food and a source of medicinal therapy. Some of the legendary greats of Greece such as the “Father of Medicine”, Hippocrates, wrote, "Honey and pollen cause warmth, clean sores and ulcers, soften hard ulcers of lips, heal carbuncles and running sores." Aristotle, philosopher and student of Socrates, believed that honey prolonged life. There was “honey therapy” used at the most famed health spa in ancient times , the Asklepieion.
Cretan honey is unique thanks to its aroma and taste, high nutritional value, stimulant and antiseptic properties, preventative effect against cardiovascular disorders and beneficial role against diseases of the urinary and digestive system.
The Workshop
In this workshop you are going to discover the “api world” attending a series of beekeeping and honey collection seminars in the unique environment of west Crete, the island of herbs and honey.
Enjoy a splendid or maybe better a themed holiday and ensure that by the time you return back home you will know how to look after a hive and manage a swarm!
Not to mention the honey themed cooking workshops with recipes dating back to ancient Greece. Either in a seminar series or through a beekeeping holiday you will meet the bees in their natural habitat.
You will have the opportunity to watch the bees up close, in a beekeepers suit. You will learn about the incredible life of the bees, the rich history of beekeeping and sample some of delicious and healthy honey products!
You will check the hives for disease and look for dead bees, learn when the bees are in need of a new tray to fill with honey. You will also make sure the bees are not too hot, the summers can be fierce here, and check for any hornets attack!
We will set you off on the right path with a master beekeeper and lots of information!
At the end, you will not want to leave behind your new good friends, the bees!
